Amal Isaiah, MD, DPhil

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

Dr Amal Isaiah is a Professor of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has secondary appointments in the Departments of Pediatrics and Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine.

Dr. Isaiah graduated from St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India. He was elected a Rhodes Scholar in 2006, following which he completed a DPhil (PhD) in Neurophysiology at Oxford University, England, focusing on developmental plasticity associated with cochlear implantation. Dr Isaiah then completed residency training in Otolaryngology at University of Maryland, and a clinical fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Children’s Health Dallas. He is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Complex Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Dr Isaiah’s clinical interests include ear, nose and throat disorders in infants and children with focus on sleep disorders, airway-related problems, ear infections and hearing loss. With over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 7 book chapters, 5 patents, and numerous national and international presentations, the Isaiah Lab is a productive research group investigating brain outcomes of pediatric sleep disordered breathing. He is funded by an R01 research grant from the National Institutes of Health/the National Heart Lung Blood Institute. His work in this area has received international attention.

Taylor Kolosky

Taylor, a second-year medical student at UMSOM, is originally from Seattle, WA but grew up in Southern Maryland. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biology at the University of Maryland College Park in 2020, she spent two years working as an Emergency Department Technician and a Clinical Research Coordinator in Baltimore. She is currently working on clinical research in pediatric sleep-disordered breathing while working toward a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. After completing medical school, she hopes to obtain a position in an Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency program. In her free time, she enjoys painting, hiking and climbing, and traveling with friends and family.

Nidhi Mathew

Sumeet Saini

Sumeet is a medical student at Wayne State University School of Medicine (M.D. Class of 2026). He graduated from Colgate University in 2020 with a B.A. in Economics and Classical Studies. While at Colgate, he served as a Teacher’s Assistant in the Economics and Classics Departments, teaching Applied Econometrics and Latin. Additionally, Sumeet has experience in investment analysis and wealth management from his previous career. He now utilizes his background in econometrics and statistical analysis to contribute to the Isaiah Lab’s mission to understand the impact of sleep-disordered breathing on the neurodevelopment of children. In his free time, Sumeet enjoys biking, hiking, traveling, reading about History, Geography, and Economics, and spending time with family and friends.

Anahita Shiva

Anahita is a second-year medical student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, originally from Montgomery County, Maryland. She obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biological Sciences at Cornell University in 2020, with minors in Business and Health Policy. She then spent two years working as a Postgraduate Researcher at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, conducting translational research on the vascular regulation of melanoma. She is now conducting clinical research on pediatric sleep-disordered breathing at the Isaiah Lab and hopes to continue pursuing research alongside her future career in medicine. After obtaining her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree, Anahita hopes to pursue a surgical specialty, with a strong interest in otorhinolaryngology. Anahita enjoys running, traveling, exploring different cuisines, and meeting new people in her free time.

Taylor Teplitzky

Dr. Taylor Teplitzky is an Assistant Professor of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine with a dual appointment in the Department of Pediatrics. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology and Anthropology from Emory University and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed residency training in Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a fellowship in Complex Pediatric Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. She is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.  She has several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the field. Her research interests include understanding the complexities of pediatric sleep disordered breathing, pediatric tracheostomy outcomes, aerodigestive disorders in children, and quality improvement in caring for children with ENT disorders. Dr. Teplitzky enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, trying new restaurants, and hiking in her free time. 

Toni White

Toni White, MPS is a Lead Research Project Coordinator for the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Toni has prior research experience from conducting trials at Johns Hopkins Bayview for the Memory and Alzheimer’s Treatment Clinic. She is a Baltimore native and received a master’s in Clinical Psychological Science from University of Maryland – College Park. In her free time, she enjoys musical theater, travelling, and video games.

Audrey Zauher

Audrey received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and her MPH in Epidemiology from Emory University. She is currently a third-year medical student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Prior to attending medical school, Audrey’s public health career included work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Arizona state and local health departments. Through projects such as the tympanostomy tube impacts study, she hopes to combine her background in public health with her interest in otolaryngology. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling and volunteering at Baltimore City community health events.
